Building Balance

Welcome to Building Balance! I’m an early-career physics professor and advocate for work-life balance and mental health. I learned the hard way in graduate school that if I didn’t create my own boundaries and find balance in my life, the world would take advantage of that. Now, I pass those lessons on to other knowledge workers who feel besieged by our era of constant connectivity and proscriptive passion.

You can sign up for regular updates by subscribing to my newsletter. I try to post monthly with a tip, a resource, or a book review, and my newsletter will notify you when those are published.

A lot of my approach involves self-reflection and consistency. I'll send tips and ideas, but you should always check with yourself before doing anything I recommend. Just because it works for me doesn't mean it will work for everyone, and developing a practice of thoughtful questioning will help you build a life that is consistent with your own values and preferences. Whenever possible, I try to provide alternatives, but don't be afraid to seek out your own alternatives or try something completely new. As with any new practice or habit, give it some time before you discard it; it can take a while to figure out how to use any new tool.

In the meantime, scroll through old posts and feel free to send me questions or comments if there's a topic you'd really like to learn more about.
